A bait ball in the tank!

Today was a big day for the tank. Turns out the outflow pipe was blocked with some silicone and a shell. We put some gauze over the inflow pipe, removed sections of pipe and cleared them. The most effective was blocking the pipe with a thumb and then pulling the thumb out really quickly.

The blocked pipe

While we were working on the pipe we noticed the inhabitants of the tank had drawn the attention of some students at lunch.

Student interest

Then after school four kids and I went to the creek. It was full of little yellow eyed mullet of various sizes. Past experience has shown that these don’t survive transplanting and low oxygenated water well so once we had caught a few in the hand nets and the throwing nets we rushed them to the tank.

Schooling fish

I left a hand net there to remove the dead and dying in the morning but after a few hours in the tank they all did look to be in good shape.

Fish in the tank

These fish have made the tank suddenly seem full as they move fast around the tank.
